Dear Pomona College Community,

As Coordinator of the Asian Studies Program, I am pleased to announce to you the launching of the Claremont Asia Summer Internship Network (CASIN), at http://casin.pomona.edu.

Why is CASIN necessary?

Asia is diverse, and is changing rapidly. On many different levels, Asia has also become an integral part of our life in the U. S. This means that it is increasingly important to keep up with what is happening there. All Pomona students need to be better informed about Asia for their studies and for their future careers.
Since last Fall, I have been consulting and working with three Pomona students, Alisher Saydalikhodjaev, Michelle Yu, and Thomas Kayes, on ways to promote Asian studies at Pomona College and at the Claremont Consortium. What became clear in our discussions is that it would be extremely beneficial if Pomona students of all levels and disciplines could participate in summer internships in Asian countries. This first-hand experience in Asia would benefit not only each individual student, but would greatly enrich the Asian Studies Program, and the intellectual life of the College as a whole.
Dean Gary Kates, Mary McMahon of ITS, Paula Verdugo of CDO, and Nancy Treser-Osgood of Alumni Relations have also been most supportive of this project.

What is CASIN?

CASIN is the tool we have developed to help secure internships in Asia for Pomona students. It is a website (http://casin.pomona.edu) that will allow internship seekers and providers to learn about each other. Pomona will not act as a matchmaker: we are simply assisting interested parties in obtaining information about each other. And we would like to ask for the cooperation of all members of the Pomona community with any information about potential internship positions.

Please help CASIN grow.

In particular, we are aware that quite a few students have done internships in Asia through various venues, but that those connections are lost when they leave their positions. Those connections will not disappear if the relevant information is posted on the CASIN website.
And if, through some other connection, you know someone who may be interested in having a Pomona student as an intern in Asia, please have them post the relevant information on the CASIN website.
As a first step, we are circulating this news among only the Pomona community; but after testing, we would like to open up the website to all the Claremont Colleges.
Please help us spread the word about CASIN

Sincerely,

Kyoko Kurita
Coordinator of Asian Studies Program
Associate Professor of Japanese
